Yoscairi lives in Batey Lecheria, a village on the outskirts of Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic. Batey is the Haitian word for village. The older generations in Batey Lecheria are Haitian. Life for Haitians in the Dominican is difficult. Yoscairi lives with her parents and two siblings. They rent a small home. Mom does not currently work because she must care for her two younger children. Yoscairi's dad sells groceries at the public market, but his meager wages are not enough to provide for the family. School in the Dominican Republic is free, but children must provide their own uniforms and supplies. This creates a disadvantage for many students who do not have the necessary materials due to finances. Yoscairi's favorite color is pink. She would like to become a flight attendant in the future.
