Yenica lives in Batey Lecheria, a village on the outskirts of Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic. Batey is the Haitian word for village. The older generations in Batey Lecheria are Haitian. Life for Haitians in the Dominican is difficult. Yenica lives with her mother. She is an only child. Yenica's father passed away when she was only one year old. Her mother sells food on the street for a living, but the little money she earns is not enough to adequately provide for Yenica. Yenica attends public school, and her favorite subject is languages. Yenica's favorite color is purple, and she wants to become a doctor one day.
