Valerie lives with her parents and her younger brother, Joshua, in Batey Lecheria in the Dominican Republic. Lecheria is a predominantly Haitian village. Like many villages in the Dominican Republic, people often settle and build makeshift homes on land they do not own. Valerie's mom cannot find work, and her dad works in public transportation. Her father's income cannot adequately provide for their family. Valerie currently attends public school, and language is her favorite subject. She enjoys playing basketball and hanging out with her friends. Valerie also loves to run. Her favorite color is yellow, and she hopes to become a scientist.
