Umaro lives with his mother and two siblings. His mother sells fish for a living. His father died while fishing at sea when Umaro was 6 years old. Umaro's mother cannot provide for her 3 children as a single mom. Umaro has never attended school due to a lack of funds. Instead, he spends his days fetching water from the nearby river for neighbors in exchange for food or money. Umaro would love to attend school. He wants to be a lawyer in the future. Umaro lives in the very poor fishing village of Tombo. Tombo is located on the western coastline of Sierra Leone and is a major hub for fish trade and transport. The town is known for its deeply religious Islamic faith. Because of the poor conditions and the bodies of water surrounding Tombo, diseases such as Malaria, Typhoid and Cholera run rampant.
