Sunkarie lives with a caregiver who grows and sells vegetables for a living. Sunkarie’s biological parents drove her out of the home, accusing her of being a witch and bringing bad luck to the family. A local witch doctor took her in, but 25 Project staff were able to intercede and transfer her to Monkey Bush into the home of a strong Christian woman. She has been doing very well there for over a year. Sunkarie is in Class 5, but only able to attend through donations towards her education. Her caregiver provides for 2 grandchildren and cannot assist Sunkarie with anything more than daily meals. Sunkarie’s favorite subject is Math. She wants to be a doctor when she grows up. Her favorite food is rice and cassava leaf.

Most parents struggle to provide their families with more than one meal a day, so the cost to send their children to school is not easy to come by. Typically, those who can afford to send one or two of their children to school will choose to send only their sons. Girls whose parents cannot afford to send them to school will be left at home to tend to daily chores, and their smaller siblings while the parents are away earning their daily wages. This lack of education and supervision makes girls just entering adolescence very vulnerable to teenage pregnancy. Girls who have not been given access to education are often left with no option but to marry at young ages to be financially supported by their husbands.
