Samantha lives with both parents and two older brothers, Nelson David and Nelson Miguel. Both of her parents are struggling to find work. Her mom sometimes works as a housekeeper but cannot make enough to adequately provide for her family. Samantha lives in Batey Lecheria, a village on the outskirts of Santo Domingo, located in the area of Los Alcarrizos. Villages are generally divided into "Dominican" villages or "Haitian" villages. Batey Lecheria is a predominantly Haitian village. Like many villages in the Dominican Republic, people often settle and build makeshift homes on land they do not own. Wealthy landowners will many times come and tear down homes for no apparent reason, other than as a reminder to the settlers that they do not own the land. Samantha attends public school, where she likes to draw. Her favorite color is pink, and she enjoys playing with dolls. Samantha wants to become a teacher in the future.
