Like most people living in Batey Lecheria, Raquel is of Haitian descent. Life for Haitians in the Dominican is difficult. Raquel"s dad abandoned the family, and her mom works as a housekeeper to try to provide for her family's basic needs. School in the Dominican Republic is free, but children must provide their own uniforms and supplies. This creates a disadvantage for many students like Raquel, who do not have the necessary materials due to finances. Raquel attends public school, and her favorite subject is art. She likes running and playing with her friends. Her favorite color is red, and in the future, she would like to become a teacher.
