Mohamed lives in the very poor fishing village of Tombo. Tombo is located on the western coastline and is a major hub for fish trade and transport. The town is known for its deeply religious Islamicfaith. Because of the poor conditions and the bodies of water that surround Tombo, diseases such as Malaria, Typhoid and Cholera run rampant. Mohamed who goes by his last name, Kojo, lives with his grandmother who is a fish trader. His father is a fisherman but is residing in the interior of the country and does not provide for Kojo. Kojo's mother died five years ago. After the death of his mother, his father abandoned him because he could not support him. Kojo's grandmother is solely responsible for him but cannot adequately provide food for him. He therefore looks for several odd jobs like fetching water for people, selling fried cake, and mending broken electrical work for people, which is very dangerous. At times, he has to relinquish his earnings to help feed the household. He discontinued school in Class IV due to the lack of funds to pay for school tuition, uniforms, school supplies and other school fees. Kojo's desire is to return to school if given the opportunity. He would like to become an attorney in the future.
