Maria lives in Batey Lecheria, a village on the outskirts of Santo Domingo, located in the area of Los Alcarrizos. Villages are generally divided into "Dominican" villages or "Haitian" villages. Batey Lecheria is a predominantly Haitian village. Like many villages in the Dominican Republic, people often settle and build makeshift homes on land they do not own. Maria lives with her mom and her two older brothers, Juan and Ricardo. Her mom works as a housekeeper but struggles to meet her family's basic needs. Her dad abandoned the family a few years ago. Maria attends public school and loves math. In her free time, she loves to play soccer. Maria's favorite color is pink, and she wants to become a nurse in the future.
