Luzmia lives in Batey Lecheria, a village on the outskirts of Santo Domingo, located in the area of Los Alcarrizos. Villages are generally divided into "Dominican" villages or "Haitian" villages. Batey Lecheria is a predominantly Haitian village. Like many villages in the Dominican Republic, people often settle and build makeshift homes on land they do not own. Luzmia lives with her mom, but her dad remains in Haiti. Luzmia's mom sells veggies on the street for a living, but her income cannot adequately provide for her family's basic needs. Luzmia attends public school, and her favorite subject is reading. In her free time, she loves to play soccer and hang out with her friends. Luzmia's favorite color is red, and she wants to become a teacher in the future.
