Luisama lives in Batey Lecheria, a village on the outskirts of Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic. Batey is the Haitian word for village. The older generations in Batey Lecheria are Haitian. Life for Haitians in the Dominican is difficult. Luisama lives with both of her parents and three siblings, Ezequiel, Jonse, and Micaela. Luisama's mother does not work because she has younger children not yet in school that she must care for. Her father works as a farmer, but his wages are not sufficient to adequately provide for his family. Luisama attends public school, and her favorite subject is languages. In her free time, she enjoys playing with her friends. Luisama's favorite color is orange, and she would like to become a doctor in the future.
