Like most people living in Batey Lecheria, Luis is of Haitian descent. Life for Haitians in the Dominican Republic is difficult. Luis' mom sells hygiene items for a living but does not make enough to provide for her family's basic needs. School in the Dominican Republic is free, but children must provide their own uniforms and supplies. This creates a disadvantage for students who do not have the necessary materials due to finances. Luis attends public school, and his favorite subject is art. In his free time, Luis likes to draw and play baseball with his friends. His favorite color is blue, and he wants to become a firefighter in the future.
