Kadiatu lives with her aunt who does petty trading to earn her living. Kadiatus's parents both passed away when she was 5 years old. Kadiatu has been diagnosed with sickle cell anemia, and this causes chronic pain and fatigue that can be managed with treatment. Kadiatus's aunt has 6 children she is raising and she cannot meet all of their needs, provide constant treatment for Kadiatu, and send them to school. Kadiatu is able to attend school after her aunt raises enough money to get her enrolled, but once the balance is due, Kadiatu is asked out of school. While her aunt is raising the amount needed, Kadiatu has to sit at home and miss out. Kadiatu is in Class 2. Her favorite subject is social studies, and she wants to become a bank manager in the future. Thanks to her sponsorship, she has been able to continue her education.

Most parents struggle to provide their families with more than one meal a day, so the cost to send their children to school is not easy to come by. Typically, those who can afford to send one or two of their children to school will choose to send only their sons. Girls whose parents cannot afford to send them to school will be left at home to tend to daily chores, and their smaller siblings while the parents are away earning their daily wages. This lack of education and supervision makes girls just entering adolescence very vulnerable to teenage pregnancy. Girls who have not been given access to education are often left with no option but to marry at young ages to be financially supported by their husbands.
