Kadiatu Kamara

ID: SLGM026

Country: Sierra Leone

My birthday is 2012-06-07

Status: Double Orphan

I want to be a nurse.

I enjoy playing balance ball (dodge ball).

My favorite subject is English.

Kadiatu lives with her grandmother. Her father passed away when she was only 6 months old, and her mother left when the burden to provide for her as a single mother was too much for her to handle. Kadiatus's grandmother works as a small business trader, but does not make enough income to meet their basic needs and also provide schooling for her grandchildren left in her care. Kadiatu is able to start school, but asked out when the balance has not been paid. She is always sad when she has to stay at home instead of attending school until her grandmother can raise the money. Kadiatu is in Class 1. She wants to be a nurse in the future, and her favorite subject is English. Thanks to her sponsorship, she has been able to continue her education.

Most parents struggle to provide their families with more than one meal a day, so the cost to send their children to school is not easy to come by. Typically, those who can afford to send one or two of their children to school will choose to send only their sons. Girls whose parents cannot afford to send them to school will be left at home to tend to daily chores, and their smaller siblings while the parents are away earning their daily wages. This lack of education and supervision makes girls just entering adolescence very vulnerable to teenage pregnancy. Girls who have not been given access to education are often left with no option but to marry at young ages to be financially supported by their husbands.
