Cindy lives in Batey Lecheria, a village on the outskirts of Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic.Batey is the Haitian word for village. The older generations in Batey Lecheria are Haitian. Cindy's dad abandoned the family. Cindy's mom cleans homes for a living when she can find work. Sometimes they have to live with Cindy's aunt because her mom can't find work and cannot pay the rent. School in the Dominican Republic is free, but children must provide their own uniforms and supplies. This creates a disadvantage for many students who do not have the necessary materials due to finances. Cindy speaks Spanish and loves the color pink. In her free time, she likes to hang out with friends.
