Carla lives in Batey Lecheria, a village on the outskirts of Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic. Batey is the Haitian word for village. The older generations in Batey Lecheria are Haitian. Life for Haitians in the Dominican is difficult. Carla lives with her mom, stepdad, and three siblings. Her mother separated from her father in 2018. Carla's mother does not work because she has younger children not yet in school that she must care for. Carla's stepfather works as a carpenter in the village. School in the Dominican Republic is free, but children must provide their own uniforms and supplies. This creates a disadvantage for many students who do not have the necessary materials due to finances. Carla attends public school, and her favorite color is green. She would like to become a doctor in the future.
