Alusine lives with his grandmother who sells food for a living. Alusine’s father died in an auto accident when Alusine was two years old. His mother could not cope with her husband’s death. She passed away from complications brought on by her immense grief. Alusine’s grandmother takes care of five of her grandchildren, and selling food is not enough to provide for both basic needs and school costs. Alusine is asked out of school each time the next school payment is needed. Because of this, Alusine experiences lapses in his learning while he waits for his grandmother to raise the needed money. Thanks to his sponsorship, he has been able to continue his education without breaks, and is favorite subject is English.
