Alpha lives with his grandmother. After his parents divorced, neither one could handle the responsibility of caring for their children separately. Alpha was taken in by his maternal grandmother, who cannot adequately provide for his needs. Alpha has never attended school. He spends his days searching for scrap metal to resell and make a little bit of money. He would love to attend school and wants to be a lawyer in the future. Alpha lives in the very poor fishing village of Tombo. Tombo is located on the western coastline of Sierra Leone and is a major hub for fish trade and transport. The town is known for its deeply religious Islamic faith. Because of the poor conditions and the bodies of water that surround Tombo, diseases such as Malaria, Typhoid and Cholera run rampant.
