Alice lives with her mother and father. Her father is attending trade school, learning to be a builder so he can provide a better life for his family. Because he is a full-time student, the burden to provide for their family falls on Alice's mother. Her mother works as a small business trader, and the income is not enough to provide basic needs and schooling for their 3 children. Alice is able to attend school until the next school fees are due, and she is asked to sit out until her parents can pay the balance. This causes lapses in her education while her mother works to raise the fees, and she can return to school. Alice is in Class 1. She hopes to become a nurse in the future, and her favorite subject is math. Thanks to her sponsorship, she has been able to continue her education.

Most parents struggle to provide their families with more than one meal a day, so the cost to send their children to school is not easy to come by. Typically, those who can afford to send one or two of their children to school will choose to send only their sons. Girls whose parents cannot afford to send them to school will be left at home to tend to daily chores, and their smaller siblings while the parents are away earning their daily wages. This lack of education and supervision makes girls just entering adolescence very vulnerable to teenage pregnancy. Girls who have not been given access to education are often left with no option but to marry at young ages to be financially supported by their husbands.
