Abu lives in the very poor fishing village of Tombo. Tombo is located on the western coastline of Sierra Leone and is a major hub for fish trade and transport. The town is known for its deeply religious Islamic faith. Because of the poor conditions and the bodies of water surrounding Tombo, diseases such as Malaria, Typhoid, and Cholera run rampant. Abu lives with his mother, who is a woodcutter. His father, who is an alcoholic, left the family. His mother is older, so she relies on Abu to gather wood in the forest for her to sell in order to meet their basic needs. Abu often has to provide food and other needs at home. He has been doing odd jobs for years and has never been able to attend school. Abu is now in an apprenticeship program with a local mechanic.
