Simon lives in Batey Lecheria, a village on the outskirts of Santo Domingo, located in the area of Los Alcarrizos. Villages are generally divided into "Dominican" villages or "Haitian" villages. Batey Lecheria is a predominantly Haitian village. Like many villages in the Dominican Republic, people often settle and build makeshift homes on land they do not own. Wealthy landowners will many times come and tear down homes for no apparent reason, other than as a reminder to the settlers that they do not own the land. Simon is an only child. He lives with both parents. His dad occasionally can get a job doing construction work to provide for their family. However, finding work has been difficult. Simon attends public school, and his favorite subject is math. In his free time, he loves to play soccer. Simon's favorite color is yellow, and he wants to become a doctor in the future.
