Johana lives in Batey Lechera in the Dominican Republic. Batey is the Haitian word for village. The older generations in Batey Lechera are Haitian. Johana was born in the Dominican Republic. She is among the youngest of nine siblings. They all live with both parents. Johana's dad is a farmer but work is hard to come by at this time. As a result, her dad does not have a steady job and struggles to provide for the family. Currently, Johana is in 4th grade at the primary public school. Her favorite subject is mathematics and during her free time she likes to play soccer. When she grows up she wants to be a teacher.
